REVIEW:  Nikon MH-19 Multi Battery Charger

     Average

The Nikon MH-19 Multi Battery Charger is an optional charger for all Nikon EN-EL3 type batteries.  This includes the EN-EL3, EN-EL3a, and EN-ELe, which are charged on the base unit.  Two optional cords (not included) allow you to charge MN-30’s and EN-4’s.

The unit has space for two EN-EL3 type batteries to fit at once, and measures 5.3”x4.3”x1”.  It weighs in at 11.2 oz. (317g).  The MH-19 auto switches between 100v and 240v AC, and includes a 12v DC adapter for in vehicle use.  When two batteries are attached to the device, they charge in sequence, not simultaneously.  So it will still take the same amount of time for two batteries to charge, but doesn’t require manual intervention.

At approximately $210, this is an expensive item for a battery charger, and one is included with each camera, so why would I want it?  I have three reasons.  The first is that I can attach two batteries at once for charging and forget about it.  The MB-D200 takes two EN-EL3e batteries, which take approximately two hours to charge each.  After a full day of shooting, I have to be available to swap the batteries on an MH-18a after the first one is done.  I’d rather have a meal or hit the sack for the next day and not worry about it.

The second reason is the included 12v capability.  I can charge batteries anywhere in the world on the move in a vehicle, without needing a converter.

And the third reason is redundancy.  You don’t want a trip jeopardized by having something as simple as a battery charger failure.  I bring the MH-19 as my primary charger AND pack an MH-18a as a backup.  I also pack two card readers for the same reason.  Sure, I could find both items in any major city, but I don’t want to have to take the time, if I don’t have to.

On the negative side, the MH-19 is considerably larger and heavier than the MH-18a, which is included with the D200.  At about $47, the MH-18a is also a fraction of the price.  You could carry three of them and still have spent far less, and be right around the same weight.

For me, the 12v capability of the MH-19 is a real plus.  Having only the one charger means only one device and one cord to keep track of, so there’s a lot less chance of leaving something behind somewhere.  I like being able to set it and forget it, and not have to worry about swapping batteries or packing multiple items.  Especially since my wife shoots a D70, which uses EN-EL3’s also.

While it has practical benefits, this one can be considered a convenience item, and perhaps a bit of a luxury.  It makes life easier, but you could easily get by without it.  The choice depends entirely on what your needs are.
